J Brown Designs is a jewelry studio that specializes in contemporary, innovative, wearable art. We create original ideas using our tribal culture as a foundation and offer you a unique and totally different facet of American Indian jewelry. We do not conform to the stereotypical "Indian" look. Our creations are feather light, designed to fully enhance the high quality elements that are hand picked for each design.

Our palette of materials begins with semi-precious gemstones from around the world. The glass "seed" beads we incorporate into our creations are from Japan, the Czech Republic, and Italy. These three countries are renown for offering the finest beads produced in the world. We also use a variety of shell ranging from Abalone, Coral, Mother of Pearl, and Freshwater Pearl to Dentilium. (Dentilium was widely used as money and traded from the Pacific coast to the Great Lakes.) The metal that we introduce into each design is 100% Sterling Silver. One of the unique materials that we use is the Porcupine Quill. The Quill has been used in decoration for thousands of years. Before the introduction of European glass beads, the principal material for embellishing Penobscot clothing was the Porcupine Quill. This is a very traditional material.

In looking for American Indian jewelry, too often you find mass produced items of poor quality and design. These pieces are made one at a time from start to finish, and no two are ever exactly alike. We are very proud to offer you our unique designs and feel they speak for themselves.
